Summer is in the air to-day and I can't help but feel like I am getting ready for my summer wines, in a bit the same way as I clear out my wardrobe's winter woolies and get the sun dresses out, the strappy heels on and get ready for lazy hazy days ahead. So as we head into summer, will your summer be fizzin, savvy, rosy, ruby, red, luscious, rich, raunchy red? Got any recommends that make for great summer wines, then share the love here....

I'm certainly feeling the Riesling this summer! Off-dry, but with some great zesty acidity so it's still got that refreshing zing to it, and of course, some beautiful aromatics. An added bonus being that a lot of the current Rieslings (I'm talking NZ ones here as the Germans have been doing it for a long time!) are starting to pull back on the alcohol. Makes for a great summer (and lunch time!) wine.

I have just tasted a wine that I will definitely be drinking this summer....... We had friends for dinner on Friday night and half a bottle of Selaks Favourite Pinot Gris 2008 was left in our fridge. Drank it tonight with pan fried snapper and a green salad - fantastic. Full, fruity and just ever so slightly dry.

Further to my post above, any recommendations on how soon you should drink your opened, half filled bottles that are left over from dinner parties etc before the taste will start to deterioate?

Silverbabe totally agree, tried that the other week and was really refreshing and zesty. Have a lovely holiday spent in great company with magical wine and thanks for living life and loving wine. Catch you in 2010.

As a rule of thumb, I tend to find reds oxidise and deterorate noticably after about three days. Doubly so in hot weather. Whites (capped and in the fridge) are a little slower, but the fruitiness of sav blanc and riesling can drop away quite quickly. But it can be a personal taste thing. I know people who'll happily drink a week-old open bottle, which to me smells of nail polish remover and still enjoy it.
With the high humidity at the moment, I've taken to refrigerating half-full bottles of red wine, bringing them out twenty minutes or so before serving to warm up. Seems to extend their shelf life a bit. (Then again, I'm also sticking them IN the fridge for a while to get them down from "room temperature" once it gets past 25 degrees or so.)
On the other hand, a bottle of dessert wine has been in my fridge for nearly five days now, and still tastes fantastic.
I guess the best guide is that when you go "bleeh" after trying it, aim it for the sink and broach a fresh bottle.

Skeeter, loved the recommendations for slighly chilling the red wine so can still enjoy in the summer. Often people think doing that is such a crime! You know like in the film where the Mum has the red wine in the fridge;) I am very partial in particular to a slighly chilled pinot noir.
Key I guess with chilling any wine is not to kill the flavour, Have to say at the moment, am loving my cool viognier and riesling, I know NZ is all about pinot noir as the rising star, but I think exciting what lays ahead for riesling too! What you enjoying to keep cool and chill with at moment?

I know summer is over but I wanted to share a great wine, suited to those warmer days, but that I will be drinking right through winter. I took my gorgeous 88 year old Nana on holiday to Christchurch over Easter and went to the Clarendon Restaurant in the central city for dinner one night. Its always hard choosing a wine when dining with Nana as she likes them white, light and sweet and I prefer full bodied, fruity and red! But the holiday was all about Nana I selected the Craggy Range 2008 Glasnevin Gravels Riesling and can only describe it as spectacular! There is now a case stored in my basement and I will be taking a bottle or two over to Nana for her to enjoy!
